The Three Different Types of Misdemeanors in Michigan

In Michigan, misdemeanors are classified by their respective penalties. There are three types:

93-day misdemeanors

These misdemeanors carry a maximum punishment of 93 days in jail and a $500 fine, or three times the value of any stolen property, depending on which amount is greater. 93-day misdemeanors include first-time DUI’s, reckless driving, and domestic violence.

1-year misdemeanors

Up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine are the maximum penalties imposed for these misdemeanors. Examples include a second-offense DUI and second-degree shoplifting.

High court misdemeanors

High court misdemeanors are more serious than 93-day and 1-year misdemeanors—maximum penalties include up to two years’ imprisonment. Indecent exposure is an example of a high court misdemeanor.

A Quick Word About Felonies

Felonies are more serious than misdemeanors and are punishable by increased prison sentences and fines. To learn more, visit our felony article, here.
